"Doc" Middleton is Credited with Putting Up Gordon's First Main Street Christmas Decorations

Doc Middleton, an early Robin Hood-Jesse James type character
One of Gordon's most infamous founders is credited with being the first to add a few Christmas decorations in downtown Gordon. Legend has it that he decorated a few of the pine trees which had been transplanted near the front door of his saloon.

Doc first came into the unorganized territory after killing soldier and remained to ply his trade and gain his fame and fortune. In the1870's he apparently made his living as the head of gang of horse thieves known as the "Pony Boys," who roamed western Nebraska and Wyoming. The "Pony Boys" exploits carried them as far east as Sherman, Custer, Knox and Antelope Counties.

All that remains of Doc Middleton's time in Gordon is the grave of his daughter Irene who died of diphtheria in 1890. Irene's tombstone is still standing in the Gordon Cemetery.
